VIRTUS CLASS SCHEDULE

All parishioners who wish to volunteer at our parish are reminded of the Diocese of Bridgeport’s requirement that all volunteers complete a Virtus class and undergo a background check.  A Virtus class will be held at St. Joseph Parish at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 21 and at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25. To register, please visit www.virtus.org and click on “registration”. If you do not have access to the internet or need assistance with on-line registration, please call the Parish Office.

SINGLE MOM SUPPORT GROUP

Theresa Kasun-Peluso, a parishioner and single mom, would like to start a single mom support group at our parish to allow them to come together in prayer and to be able to get the word out about the needs of this group of women in our parish. If anyone is interested, please call Theresa directly (917-687-8108). For a single mom, her standard of living goes down 45% after divorce and only 15% of women are awarded any form of court-ordered spousal support. Most children live with their mothers and suffer the effects also. Less than 50% of the women who claim child support ever receive the full amount. Single moms have 40% higher incidence of major depression due to increased stresses and decreased social support.

FATHER NICK’S THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY

The Connecticut Bike Project, in conjunction with Catholic Charities, will be holding a bike drive in the parking lot of St. Joseph Church on Saturday, October 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Used children’s and adults bikes in good shape are reconditioned and distributed to the poor of Bridgeport through the Urban Center at St. Charles Parish and the Fresh Start Reentry Program.  Adults receiving bikes are either low income, have physical or mental disabilities that prevent them from driving, are ex-offenders and those without driver’s licenses.  Children’s bikes are given to any child who requests one.  It would be appreciated if bikes are not brought to the parish prior to October 2 as facilities are not available to store them.  Bikes may be brought, however, prior to the bike drive to the home of the project organizer, Brooks Sumberg, at 96 Hillspoint Road, Westport (please leave them at the end of the driveway closest to the house).

Last year the program benefited 25 students from 19 families who otherwise might not have been able to afford a Catholic education. Administered directly by our parish, funds collected by the “Guardian Angels” program subsidize a significant part of the tuition cost for active parish families who demonstrate some financial need. If you would like to sponsor a child in our school next year for any amount from $250 to $4,000, please contact Msgr. Chris directly. Monthly payments can be made starting at $25.
